Do leaders love their teams?

I have long ago recognized that, in my work, I’m both teacher and student. But, I confess that I have yet to formally learn the art of teaching. After all, it is a lot more than showing up and telling the class all you know.

When you next take on the role of teacher with your marketing team, consider the two things that a religious leader long ago said would make a good teacher. First, he stressed the importance of knowing your subject matter thoroughly and being passionate about it. Second, he said you have to love your students. However, #2 is more important than #1, if you have to prioritize.

Now, think about the last time you made an effort to learn something new.  Or, ask yourself when you last spent quality time with your team that showed them your commitment to them. A few years ago, I gave our junior account people a copy of Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” as a holiday gift. Steve Mietelski from our creative team read it to us. He may not be John Lithgow, but Steve came very close.
